CHAPTER THIRTEEN

For the past hour, Josephine had been desperately trying to pick up her phone.

It was lying on her bedroom floor, about three feet away from her, halfway underneath her dresser. She knew this because someone had texted her a while ago, causing the screen to illuminate -- momentarily, the only light in her pitch-dark room -- and a soft vibration to run through the floorboards. Thank god she'd left it on silent. If he heard it, he would take away this last lifeline, too, and leave her completely helpless.

Her hands were bound at the wrists with duct tape stuck behind her back. It made it difficult to feel across the floor, inching her way toward the phone. As she moved, tears ran down her face, and her chest felt weak from the panic. Above all else, she was certain that she was going to die; it made her fingers shake as she struggled to pick up the phone.

From the other room, she could hear her father's voice shouting. The intruder was in there with him; she could hear his silky responses, though she couldn't make out any of the words.

Josephine's heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her ears. She tried not to think about what was going on in the other room, but it was impossible to tune it out completely. The sound of her father's voice, raw and angry, mixed with the stranger's cool tones, was like a symphony of terror.

Finally, she managed to grasp the edge of her phone and dragged it slowly towards her. When it was close enough for her to reach, she tried to use her nose to swipe the screen and unlock it. She had to call someone, anyone who could help her.

It took several attempts to open the phone, then several more to bring up her contacts. The tears that ran down her face made the task even harder; they dripped onto the phone's screen and blurred her vision, making the icons difficult to see.

After a few minutes of trying, she paused, gritting her teeth against the fresh flood of tears that threatened to overwhelm her. As her efforts slowed, she realized that she could no longer hear her father's shouts from the other room.

He was coming.

Immediately, she redoubled her efforts to open the phone. She writhed on the floor, trying to get a better look at the glowing screen.

Turning her head, she saw a silhouette move in the corner of the room. A soft voice rang out in the darkness: "Oh, sweetheart. I wouldn't do that if I were you."

He was here.

He had moved so silently she hadn't even heard the wooden floors creak beneath his feet. Like a shadow, from room to room, using the dark to conceal himself.

Fear gripped her heart as she tried to scramble away from him, but he was too fast. He knelt beside her and yanked the phone out of her hand, tossing it across the room. "No more playing games, Josie," he lilted cheerfully like he was enjoying himself.
